Whale watching from Māʻalaea
Māʻalaea Harbor sits on the south side of Maui’s central isthmus, facing Māʻalaea Bay, a favorite area for mothers and calves. It has more whale watch boats than anywhere else on the island, from big two-deck catamarans to six-guest luxury boats.
Because it is central, Māʻalaea is easy to reach from Kīhei, Wailea, Kahului and even West Maui. The trade-off is wind: afternoons here are often breezy and choppy, so morning trips are the smoothest choice for kids and anyone prone to seasickness.
Next to the harbor you will find the Maui Ocean Center and the Pacific Whale Foundation, which makes Māʻalaea a good place to spend a whole whale-themed morning.
Getting there
- Parking. Harbor parking fills up in season. There is more parking at the Maui Harbor Shops next to the Maui Ocean Center.
- Check-in. Some operators check you in at their slip, others at a shop in the Harbor Shops. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early.
- Driving time. About 20 minutes from Kahului and Kīhei, 35 to 45 minutes from Kāʻanapali.
