Whale watching from South Maui

South Maui faces Māʻalaea Bay, Kahoʻolawe and Molokini, and the water here is usually calm in the morning. Whales are often just a few minutes from shore, so South Maui trips tend to be short and efficient.

Most raft whale watches leave from the Kīhei Boat Ramp, and a few catamarans and kayak tours start from beaches in Wailea and Mākena. If you are staying in Kīhei or Wailea, there is no need to drive to a harbor at all.

Mornings are best here too. By early afternoon the trade winds often pick up across the bay.

Getting there

  • Kīhei Boat Ramp. Free parking. Check in 30 minutes before departure.
  • Mākena and Wailea. Some boats load from the beach. Your confirmation will say exactly where to meet.
  • Driving time. About 5 to 15 minutes from most Kīhei and Wailea hotels.
